Just getting into crystals and not sure where to start? You're in good company — it's one of the most common questions we get in-store. Here's a friendly, no-pressure guide to choosing your first few crystals, looking after them, and where to find them in New Zealand.
How do I choose a crystal?
The easy answer: pick what you're drawn to. Most people choose by colour, by the look of a particular piece, or by what a crystal is traditionally “known for.” There's no wrong choice — start with one or two that catch your eye rather than trying to collect everything at once.
The best crystals for beginners
These five are affordable, easy to find, and cover the qualities people most often look for:
- Rose quartz — the classic “stone of love,” soft and calming. See rose quartz.
- Amethyst — traditionally calming, and a beautiful purple. See amethyst.
- Clear quartz — the all-rounder, known as the “master crystal.”
- Black tourmaline — a popular grounding, protective stone.
- Citrine — sunny and uplifting, associated with positivity and confidence.
- Selenite — a soft, milky-white crystal many people use to “cleanse” their other stones.
(These are traditional and metaphysical associations shared for interest — crystals aren't a substitute for medical or professional advice.)
How many should I start with?
Two or three is plenty. It's far nicer to get to know a few crystals you love than to feel overwhelmed by a big pile. You can always add more as you go — and most people do!
How do I cleanse and care for crystals?
“Cleansing” is simply a way many people like to reset a crystal when they first get it or now and then afterwards. Gentle, popular methods include leaving them out under the moonlight overnight, using the sound of a bell or chime, or resting them on a piece of selenite. Avoid harsh methods — salt and long water soaks can damage softer stones.
For everyday care: keep coloured stones like amethyst and rose quartz out of long direct sun (it can fade them), give pieces the occasional gentle wipe, and store delicate items separately so they don't scratch.
Beginner crystal FAQ
Do crystals need to be cleansed or charged?
There's no rule — it's a personal, traditional practice. Many people like to cleanse a new crystal once when they get it, then occasionally after that. Moonlight or sound are the gentlest options.
Can I keep different crystals together?
Yes. There's no harm in storing or displaying them together — just keep softer or polished pieces from knocking against harder ones so they don't scratch.
Can crystals go in water?
Hard crystals like quartz are usually fine with a quick rinse, but many stones aren't water-safe. When in doubt, keep them dry — and always avoid salt water.
Are crystals safe to have at home?
The crystals in this guide are display and decorative pieces. As with any small object, keep tiny tumbles away from young children and pets who might swallow them.
